WordPress Vs Blogger (Part 2)

Hi Guys,

You may have had a chance to read Part 1 of this blog post but if not don’t worry here’s a link.

Fair play to me!

A Quick Recap, this is Part 2 after all

So to reintroduce in a sentence, we are investigating the Pro’s and Con’s of WordPress(.org) Vs Blogger.

In Part 1 we looked at some factors that should be considered when choosing a blogging platform.

  • Ease of Use
  • Control
  • Ownership

Simply, Blogger won the ‘Ease of Use’ and WordPress came out on top in ‘Control’ and ‘Ownership’!

Part Two starts here!

This time around we’ll take a look at:

  • Maintenance/Security
  • Restrictions
  • The Future

You may not consider this stuff when you think about blogging but its a big deal on a day to day basis.

Right OK here we go again !!! Click a factor for more info, click again to hide

Maintenance/Security

I’ve combined maintenance and security simply because, in general, maintenance is updating your site and keeping your site updated is a huge part of keeping it secure.

Blogger is, as we mentioned before, ran by Google. This is one of the reasons why you don’t need to update your blog and the main reason it is a pretty secure platform. Another reason why you don’t need to update Blogger is because there is nothing to update. There are not really any new features released on a regular basis so therefore there are not too many improvements.

WordPress is constantly being improved along with its plugins (addons/extra features often developed by third parties) and therefore regular updates are released for the platform. Some of the releases are security fixes for vulnerabilities that may have be exploited by hackers. For this reason WordPress needs to be updated/maintained on a regular basis. That being said an update is performed by clicking a single button so its not really a hindrance.

This is the toughest one to call because the requirement for WordPress to be updated is spawned by the platforms constant development.

It pains me to say it but Blogger requires less maintenance and security measures so I guess its more secure and wins this round. I feel dirty saying that though

Restrictions

Blogger has a number of restrictions, that in this day and age (in my opinion), are ridiculous. The home page of your Blogger blog can only be 1mb in size. That means that as your blog grows and you want to include advertising or another feature you may not see it if the quality of your images are too high. Also image sizes are restricted by Blogger so if you have a high quality camera the image sizes may be reduced hence reducing quality.

Blogger also has a very limited supply of templates so you may find it hard to stand out from other blogs. T his isn’t ideal considering how much your blog may grow in the (hopefully not so distant) future .

WordPress doesn’t have these restrictions. You can upload large images, create elaborate page and blog layouts with all the latest website features available in the world to help you stand out from the crows

WordPress wins here by a larger margin than any of the other factors we have spoken about!!

The Future

Bloggers future is entirely dependant on Google. We have recently seen that Google has removed some of it services as the market changes. In fairness they are a successful company and profit and loss markets dictate the direction their business moves. Hopefully this doesn’t happen to Blogger but we can’t be sure.

WordPress is independent and is used on over 76.5 million websites across the world. That’s an insane number! As mentioned above WordPress is constantly developing and its future is certainly bright.

WordPress by a mile here!

Conclusion.. you’ve reached the end, congrats!

To recap everything in a quick paragraph might not be easy but I’ll give it a whack.

If you want to set up a simple blog that will get you online in minutes and you won’t have to worry about updating and maintaining choose Blogger.

If you have ambitions to stand out from the crowd with a modern design and move your blog forward as new trends and website features become available, or if you want to learn about how to maximize your blogs potential and want to maintain complete control … Choose WordPress.

Sorted!!!
